The Penitent Magdalene is a wooden sculpture made by Donatello around 1453-1455. Donatello pictures Mary Magdalene as a old, wrinkled, and unappealing woman with somewhat muscular arms. The sculpture also shows Mary Magdalene praying for repentance and piety with her hands not touching and her hair covering her whole body. You can see where she has parched lips and broken teeth. Mary Magdalene is a famous figure in many pieces of art because, she is said to have been possessed by 7 demons, however; Jesus saved her and she started following him. She witnessed his crucifixion, and was the 1st person to witness his resurrection. Although she is portrayed in many pieces of art, Donatello's statue of her is famous because, he used detailed and realistic carvings in white poplar wood to portray her in a non-beautiful way which is unlike any Mary Magdalene piece of art ever done before. This statue is 2 meters tall and is a one of a kind sculpture that can be seen in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo in Florence, Italy.
